Souvenirs from Boyhood
Growing up in Wartime North Staffordshire
Roger Bentley is a retired scientist who lives in Montreal.
He was born, grew up and was educated in North
Staffordshire, the traditional home of the pottery industry. His family, on both sides, worked in the industry in previous generations.
After his retirement, he turned to his interest in history. He carried out research into the history of the Potters’ Emigration Society, a mid-19th century utopian project to send unemployed potters from Staffordshire to America to found a self-supporting colony. His article describing the fate of the enterprise was published in the Wisconsin Magazine of History in 2010.
In March 2020, he was advised to remain in his home due to Covid 19. It was then that he decided to write a memoir about his boyhood in North Staffordshire.
